As we celebrate one year since starting Chasing Red Flags, we’re filled with gratitude for this incredible journey—one that has been challenging, rewarding, and deeply meaningful. What began as a simple idea to make sweatshirts and T-shirts to raise money for mental health has grown into a mission-driven community making a REAL impact.
In just a year, we’ve raised $10,000 for mental health initiatives, launched a podcast, built a community blog with guest writers, and created a resources page to support and remind everyone that they are never alone.
Of course, the past year hasn’t been without its challenges—plenty of mistakes, late nights, arguments, and moments when we questioned if we could keep going. But every hurdle reminded us of our purpose and revealed how much growth is possible when you don’t give up. The moments of doubt were always outweighed by the rewards of building connections, sharing lived experiences, and learning from the amazing stories of resilience within our community.
One of the things we’re most proud of is our stories page, where people can open up about their experiences and ask questions in a safe and supportive space. Reading these stories reminds us of why we started Chasing Red Flags: to break the stigma around mental health and let everyone know they don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone.
As we look back, here are five valuable tips we've picked up about starting a business, especially one that’s so personal and community-driven:
1. CELEBRATE THE WINS, BIG AND SMALL.
One of the hardest lessons is learning to pause and appreciate even the smallest victories. In a world that constantly pushes us to want more, it’s easy to dismiss progress as “not enough.” But every step forward—no matter how small—is a brick in the foundation of something meaningful.
2. EMBRACE MISTAKES AS OPPORTUNITIES.
Mistakes are inevitable, but they aren’t failures—they’re lessons waiting to be discovered. We’ve learned to own our mistakes, reflect on them, and see them as opportunities for growth. Sometimes, they even lead us to paths we hadn’t considered.
3. KEEP GOING, EVEN WHEN IT’S TOUGH.
There are days when the weight of it all feels too heavy. But it’s persistence that bridges the gap between dreams and reality. Every struggle and stumble is a part of creating something REAL. If you’re finding it hard right now, know that the breakthrough could be closer than you think.
4. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF ALONG THE WAY.
Starting a new business is exciting, but it’s easy to forget about self-care in the hustle. We’ve learned the hard way that burnout doesn’t help anyone. Taking breaks and protecting your mental health is essential to staying connected to your purpose.
5. HOLD ONTO YOUR “WHY.”
When things get tough, it’s natural to doubt. On those days, we remind ourselves of the reason we started. Holding onto that purpose keeps us grounded and motivated, even when the road ahead seems unclear.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue growing and evolving alongside this incredible community. To everyone who has supported Chasing Red Flags this past year: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We wouldn’t be here without you, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
Here’s to another year of breaking down barriers, lifting each other up, and turning “red flags” into moments of growth.
