THE GREEN PRESCRIPTION: HOW NATURE CAN BOOST YOUR MENTAL HEALTH BY BRAD PEIRCE

In recent years, mental health issues have reached alarming levels across the globe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of disability, affecting over 275 million and 300 million people, respectively. With so many individuals facing mental health challenges, it is essential to explore solutions beyond the commonly prescribed methods of medication and therapy. One surprisingly effective remedy for enhancing psychological well-being lies within the natural world around us.

ACCESSING THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE
The more we connect with nature, the more we reveal its healing potential. Spending time outdoors, especially in green spaces, has been scientifically proven to enhance mental health and well-being. Research shows that merely being in natural environments, even for 15 to 30 minutes a day, can calm the mind, lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, reduce blood pressure, and improve mood, focus, and concentration.

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

1. Reduced Stress and Anxiety: A Stanford University study found that individuals who walked in natural environments experienced a significant reduction in negative thoughts and lower anxiety levels compared to those who walked in urban areas lacking green spaces.

2. Improved Mood: Spending just 15 minutes daily in nature can boost happiness and lessen sadness. This effect is powerful when individuals participate in activities such as gardening, hiking, or enjoying time in green spaces.

3. Enhanced Cognitive Function: Nature offers significant cognitive benefits. Research published in Frontiers in Psychology indicates that exposure to nature helps restore cognitive function, enhance focus, and boost problem-solving abilities and creativity.

4. Boost in Immune Function: Being outdoors in natural light can help regulate circadian rhythms, improve sleep, and strengthen the immune system, which can affect overall mental health.

Alongside scientific data, my experiences with nature have highlighted its effectiveness in managing my mental health and well-being. My daily morning walks with my dog in the local woods provide moments of quiet reflection, a profound sense of connection to something far more significant than myself, an uplifted mood, stress relief, and heightened creativity—all of which are invaluable for helping me escape the negative self-talk and mental chatter that can be loud, demanding, and overwhelming during tough times. The calming influence of nature helps me regain perspective, enhances my mental clarity, restores feelings of vitality and joy, and reminds me of my true self.

THE BENEFITS OF ECOTHERAPY
Ecotherapy, often called nature therapy or green therapy, is a growing field that harnesses the healing power of nature to improve mental health. It can take various forms, including garden therapy, forest bathing (also known as shinrin-yoku), and animal-assisted therapy.

1. Garden Therapy involves spending time with and tending to plants, nurturing and pruning them, clearing weeds, and cultivating healthy soil. It has been shown to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm. Healthy soils are also rich in minerals, which can be great for your skin and overall health.

2. Forest bathing is a Japanese practice that encourages individuals to immerse themselves in a forest and fully engage with their surroundings through all their senses, including sight, sound, touch, and smell. Research has shown that it lowers stress levels and enhances mood.

3. Animal-assisted therapy allows individuals to interact with animals in natural environments, promoting emotional healing through these connections. This can include spending time with pets or farm animals like goats and horses. Horses are particularly recognized for their sensitivity to human emotions.

Ecotherapy offers a break from modern life's overstimulation, digital distractions, and pressures. Connecting with nature can heal and rejuvenate, whether by walking in the park, hiking in the woods, gardening, or just sitting by the water.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR RECONNECTING WITH NATURE IN YOUR DAILY LIFE
Even if you reside in a city, there are numerous ways to connect with nature and enjoy its physical and mental health benefits:

1. Take Daily Walks: Make it a habit to take a daily walk in a local park, green space, field, or forest. Try walking at different speeds or barefoot on the grass, noticing the various sensations of nature as you go. Remember, even 15 to 30 minutes in or near nature can positively impact your well-being.

2. Start a Small Garden: Whether in your backyard, on your balcony, or on your windowsill, gardening can be a soothing and productive way to connect with nature and learn to care for it (which will care for you in return). Embrace your discomfort by getting your hands dirty and experiencing your garden's abundance through touch, smell, and taste.

3. Explore Community Green Spaces: Visit local nature reserves, botanical gardens, or community gardens. Many cities feature urban areas designed for relaxation and a connection to the outdoors. Try different methods of capturing the sights and sounds of nature, such as taking photos, recording bird songs, or sketching the shapes of flowers and clouds.

4. Plan Outdoor Activities: Regularly incorporate outdoor time into your routine. Hiking, picnicking, or enjoying a park can be excellent ways to connect with nature and make it a consistent source of mental rejuvenation. Take deep breaths and pay attention to the details and diversity of nature’s offerings to fully engage your senses.

Connecting with nature provides a straightforward, accessible, and highly effective method to improve mental health and well-being. The relationship between our mental health and the planet's health is profoundly interconnected. By spending more time in nature and reconnecting with the living world around us and our inner selves—our mind and body—we nurture our well-being and aid in the planet's healing.

This Earth Day, I encourage you to connect with nature to benefit the environment and enjoy its powerful physical and mental health advantages. Whether it's a quick walk in the park or a weekend escape in the mountains, nature can help restore balance and harmony to your life, both for you and those you care about.
